Reverse Storytelling: The Future-Proofing Technique for Entrepreneurs

Reverse Storytelling Start at the End

Greetings, Reader!

One significant benefit of being an entrepreneur is that we get to create our own stories. Its our responsibility and our opportunity.

I used the Reverse Storytelling technique to push me forward, creating a roadmap I would follow for over 25 years. Heres how it works:

In the most basic sense, Reverse Storytelling is a system where you decide what story you want to be able to tell to people later in life5 years, 10 years, or 25whatever time horizon you are working on.

Once you create that story in your head, you use it to make decisions, take action, and develop systems to fulfill it.

But there is more nuance than just envisioning your future story and working backward to achieve success.

There are many layers that help you

build over time.

I should also mention that I use this same technique personally. What kind of husband do I want to be? How will my role as a father play out? Decide how the END of the story will turn out FIRST then work to that point.

Here is how I used Reverse Storytelling to get to the other side of the daily grind.

Visualize your audience.

When I use the term storytelling, I mean sitting with a group of people and telling them a story. It could be about a business you started, a failure you overcame, or some personal anecdote.

In my case, I visualize a group sitting around a campfire listening to me. I love campfires and the shared experience of laughter and stories they promote.

Visualizing the end game of where my story will be told helps the Reverse Storytelling concept feel more solid.

Find your storytelling spot and your audience. Envision that spot and that group as you begin the Reverse Storytelling process.

Envisioning success and failure are equally important.

Of course, you want to always focus on success and think about it in your story. Thinking about how you will someday mentor other people on a similar journey once you have achieved success is a powerful technique.

However, fear is very persuasive. What story will you tell if you quit and dont follow through? How will your friends and community perceive you if you cant pay your bills?

It's terrific to picture yourself basking in glory. But dont forget to picture yourself living in a studio apartment alone if you fail in business and your personal life.

For years, I drove to my office and would see the same homeless guy standing around the 7-11. He wore this long black leather jacket and carried a huge army-green duffle bag. Seeing this poor guy was a tremendous motivator for me each morning before I got to our building.

That could be me.

Which story do you want to tell? The success story or the failure? The good news is that you get to choose. It is entirely up to you, and I know which choice you will make.
